Easy to make and ready in no time. This Danish warm potato salad adapts well if you have a small family dinner or a large family get together such as picnics, football season or holidays. It is a perfect side dish.
I make this Danish warm potato salad during the fall and winter season. This delicious side dish is like comfort food. My mother made this side dish when I was growing up. Danish Frikadeller always goes great with this on a cold fall day.
However, this is always a winner during summer meals too. If we do some outdoor grilling, I enjoy having the warm potato salad with a hotdog.
Below is a recipe to make homemade Danish Warm Potato Salad Recipe – Dansk warm kartoffel salat. Great to have any time of the year!
- 6 medium potatoes
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 large onion thinly sliced
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup white wine vinegar
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup of warm cream
- cutting board
- sharp knife
- small-medium heavy saucepan
- wooden spoon
Boil the potatoes, peal them, cool them and cut them into slices.
Now we are ready to make the sauce in a medium size pot. First, we need to melt the butter and two tablespoons of water.
Next add the onions, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. Stir the sauce mixture with a wooden spoon. Let this cook for about 5 to 10 minutes or until the onions are transparent.
Once the onions are clear, we are ready to add warm cream into the pot.
Finally, add the potato slices into the onion sauce mixture and heat them up. Stir gently, being careful not to break the potatoes.
Many times I like to go into my garden and grab some chives for the Danish warm potato salad. I chop up a bunch of chives and add it on top of the warm potato salad. It gives it a nice color too.
Another typical Danish topping are capers. If you have never had capers on your warm potato salad, it will give your next meal a new twist.
There are many meat options to have with the warm potato salad. We usually have it with either fried bacon, ham, hotdogs or frikadeller. These choices are classic to have in Denmark too.
Of course you can add a side salad on the side too. However, I love having sliced red beets. If you have seen alot of my YouTube videos, you might have noticed that I eat sliced red beets with many of the meals I eat. Well, sliced red beets is very typical Danish too.
